'SUP! After Dark

It’s pretty normal to go out for a paddle or surf in San Diego….but after sunset it’s usually time for happy hour. This adventure changes up your evening plans with a little late-night paddle, complete with a board that illuminates in the water. There a few places that offer the glow in the dark paddling, but for the newbie I would recommend the Mission Bay Sports Center. (season opens after Memorial Day, call for reservations). The experience is fun for the perfect girls night, or even a creative way to throw a little adventure into your average date night. Paddling on the bay is super calm and simple for anyone testing it out for the first time.

How does it work?

You start on the shore, they strap waterproof LED lights around your board which make it “glow”. Oh, and don’t be scared, but sometimes you can also spot some little fishies swimming below (let’s hope they’re just the “little” fishies!). If this is your first time, you’ll get a little lesson on holding the paddle and how to balance on the shore from the instructors before dipping in. My advice: push out on your knees and get a feel for it before standing. It’s dark, so it may take a second for you to get your balance, but the boards they use are like little boats…..and honestly it will seem much easier than you think. Now go have fun! And if you fall in, well….take a pic to document it!

What to wear?

Since it can be a little chillier at night, I suggest wearing work out style clothing (you can opt for a swimsuit underneath, and men wear board shorts and a hoodie). My favorite workout clothes to wear are the quick dry fabrics made by local Solana Beach based company, Graced by Grit. Their stuff is actually built to be worn paddle boarding. If you fall in it dries quick and you can still manage to finish your adventure. Regardless of what you wear, bring a change of clothes and a few towels. The beach is obviously sandy as well so don’t expect to leave feeling like you could change into your evening attire and hit up Parque in the Gaslamp. This will be your perfect taco Tuesday and Margs night! #enjoy
